Dengue Treatment in Chandigarh

What is Dengue?

Dengue is a mosquito-borne viral infection that spreads mainly through the bite of an infected Aedes mosquito. It is common in tropical and subtropical regions, especially during the rainy season. Symptoms usually include high fever, severe headache, pain behind the eyes, muscle and joint pain, nausea, vomiting, and skin rashes. In some cases, dengue can become severe and lead to complications like bleeding and a drop in platelet count. There is no specific cure for dengue, but early diagnosis, proper rest, hydration, and medical care can help manage symptoms and prevent serious complications.

Symptoms

The symptoms of Dengue can vary, but often include:

  • Sudden high fever
  • Severe headache
  • Pain behind the eyes
  • Muscle and joint pain (body ache)
  • Extreme tiredness and weakness

In rare cases, dengue can lead to serious complications such as severe bleeding, organ damage, or dengue shock syndrome.

Diagnosis and Treatment

Dengue is diagnosed through clinical symptoms, physical examination, and blood tests such as NS1 antigen, IgM/IgG antibodies, and platelet count. Early diagnosis helps in monitoring the severity of the disease and preventing complications. There is no specific antiviral treatment for dengue; care mainly focuses on symptom management. Treatment includes adequate rest, plenty of fluids to prevent dehydration, and paracetamol to control fever and pain. Medicines like aspirin and ibuprofen should be avoided as they can increase the risk of bleeding. Severe cases may require hospitalization for close monitoring, intravenous fluids, and supportive care.

Most cases of dengue are mild and recover with proper rest and supportive care within one to two weeks; however, hospitalization and close medical monitoring may be required in severe cases.

Prevention of Dengue

Prevention of dengue mainly focuses on controlling mosquito breeding and avoiding mosquito bites. Stagnant water in coolers, flower pots, tyres, and containers should be removed regularly, as mosquitoes breed in clean standing water. Using mosquito repellents, coils, nets, and wearing full-sleeved clothing can help reduce the risk of bites. Keeping doors and windows screened and maintaining cleanliness in and around homes is also important. Community awareness and timely preventive measures play a key role in reducing the spread of dengue.
