Fever and Cats (Cat Scratch Fever)
Cat scratch fever, also known as cat scratch disease (CSD), is a bacterial infection caused by Bartonella henselae. As the name suggests, it's most commonly transmitted through a scratch or bite from a cat, especially kittens.
Symptoms
The symptoms of cat scratch fever can vary, but often include:
- A small bump or blister at the site of the scratch or bite
- Swollen lymph nodes, usually near the scratch or bite
- Fever
- Fatigue
- Headache
In rare cases, CSD can cause more serious complications, such as infection of the brain, heart, or eyes.

Diagnosis and Treatment
If you think you have cat scratch fever, it's important to see a doctor. They can diagnose the
infection based on your symptoms and a physical exam. In some cases, blood tests may be
needed.
Most cases of CSD are mild and resolve on their own within a few weeks or months. However,
antibiotics may be needed for more severe infections.
Prevention
The best way to prevent cat scratch fever is to avoid being scratched or bitten by cats. If you are
scratched or bitten, wash the area thoroughly with soap and water.
