Fever After a Dip? Could it be Leptospirosis?
Enjoying a refreshing swim in freshwater can be a great way to beat the heat. However, it's important to be aware of potential health risks associated with such activities. One such risk is Leptospirosis, a bacterial infection that can be contracted through contact with water or soil contaminated by the urine of infected animals.
What is Leptospirosis?
Leptospirosis is caused by spiral-shaped bacteria called Leptospira. These bacteria can infect various animals, including rodents, cattle, pigs, and dogs. Humans can get infected when they come into contact with the urine of these animals, or with water or soil contaminated with their urine. This can happen through:
- Swimming or wading in contaminated freshwater (lakes, rivers, ponds).
- Contact with contaminated soil or vegetation.
- Occupational exposure (e.g., farmers, veterinarians).

Symptoms to Watch Out For:
The symptoms of Leptospirosis can vary widely, from mild flu-like illness to a more severe, potentially life-threatening form. Common symptoms include:
- High fever
- Headache
- Muscle aches (often in the calves and lower back)
- Chills
- Red eyes
- Jaundice (yellowing of the skin and eyes)
- Abdominal pain
- Vomiting
Early diagnosis and treatment with antibiotics are essential for managing Leptospirosis and
preventing severe complications, such as kidney damage, meningitis (inflammation of the
membranes surrounding the brain and spinal cord), liver failure, and even death.
If you're experiencing a fever and have recently been swimming in freshwater, don't delay
seeking medical advice. Our experienced team at Navdisha Medicare is here to provide you
